IMDb: Adding a New Title
Title Formats
- We use
the original title of a movie/show in its original
language as it appears on screen in the opening
credits.
- We
also associate the year of first public screening with each title as an
aid to recognizing and distinguishing similar titles.
- For TV
titles this is the broadcast year of the first episode. For movie titles
this year is either the year of general release or of a festival
presentation if earlier. (NOTE: Closed screenings for the crew or the
media or test screenings of the unfinished product for marketing reasons
do not count as public screenings).
- If two
titles have the same title in the same year we add a "/"
followed by roman numerals after the year as necessary. For example, Twilight (2008/I) and Twilight (2008/II).
- Please
note that we do NOT create separate new titles for each
season of a TV-show so the year used is the year the show first aired. You
may indicate a person's participation in later years of the show by adding
them only to the appropriate episodes.
- If you
are uncertain how to categorize a title (miniseries, TV movie, theatrical,
etc.), please see the title types guide.
- For
more information about the required Title types/formats please see
the the
title formats guide.
Capitalization
·
Capitalization is
language dependent. The relevant language is the language of the country origin
so be careful with titles in English which are made from non-English words as
in El Cid or La
Bamba.
·
English, Portuguese,
Hebrew, Indian languages:
All capital letters at the start of words, with a few exceptions:
·
English language words
which must begin with a lower-case letter (unless at
the end of a title) are: a an and as at by for from in of on or the to
with
·
French, Italian,
Spanish, Scandinavian languages, Hungarian, Dutch, Slovenian, Serbian,
Croatian, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese:
All lower-case letters at the start of words, except first word plus some
exceptions (names etc.)
·
German: Mixed
·
Here are some example
movie titles to illustrate these rules:
o
The
Silence of the Lambs (1991)
o
Les
enfants du paradis (1945)
Eligibility: General Public Interest
For a work to be eligible for
inclusion in the database it must be of general
public interest and should be available to the public or have been
available in the past. We accept most kinds of films/TV shows, including big
screen and direct-to-DVD features; web series; documentaries; video games;
experimental films and short films. General public interest is assumed if a
work has been:
· Released
in cinemas.
· Shown on
TV.
· Released
on video or the web or prints have been made available to the public.
· Listed in
the catalog of an established video retailer; (e.g. Amazon.com).
· Accepted
and shown on film festivals.
· Made by a
(now) famous artist or person of public interest.
· Made
famous for some reason and is widely talked about/referenced in media or the
'film community' or is now of general historic interest for some reason.
NOTE: Unless general public
interest is assumed for one of the reasons stated above, general public
interest is NOT given for
titles:
· Made for
private home use only (i.e. like a home movie, which is of a strictly private
nature).
· Made for
local consumption by friends, family members and neighbors, the local school
campus etc. (including "local access television").
Videos which are primarily
distributed online can qualify for listing on IMDb based on the following
criteria. (These criteria do not apply to titles which qualify for IMDb listing
as theatrically released films, made for video titles, or television
programming.)
Online videos must be available
to the public for viewing, either free or for a fee. Videos which are set for
private viewing only by selected persons are not eligible for listing.
An online video must be available
for viewing at the time it is submitted to IMDb as a new title. (That is,
future videos not yet available should not be submitted, nor should past videos
which can no longer be found online.) However, a video which was available for
viewing at the time it was entered into the database will not be removed merely
if it becomes unavailable in the future.
An online video is not eligible
for listing if it consists primarily of footage from another title which is or
could be listed in IMDb unless the creation of the video displays a level of
artistic merit or can be considered of public interest. Trailers are not
eligible for listing.
Online videos which are ongoing
series should be entered into IMDb as television series with the keyword
web-series and the individual videos being entered as episodes. Online videos
which are not part of a series should be entered as made-for-video titles.
A link to where the video can be
viewed online should be submitted in the Video Clips section under Links to
Other Sites with the description WebsiteName – Full video (Format).
IMDb retains the right to reject any work whose eligibility according to above rules is dubious and/or unverifiable. This may include works which are in their very first development stages. If you would like to submit a project in development, please sign-up for IMDbPro. IMDb retains the right to change and adapt eligibility rules as circumstances require.
Completing the Form
When using the new title page to add a title,
please bear in mind the following important guidelines:
·
Titles are not
automatically added; the data is sent to the IMDb title managers who will
verify the existence and eligibility of the title and, if acceptable, add it.
·
Once the title itself
has been added to the database, it may take up to 7 days for the information
submitted along with it to also appear.
·
The more information
you provide, the more chance we will be able to verify the title and add it to
the database.
·
When submitting the
title, please complete as many of the forms as possible at each stage of the
form and then press the 'Continue' button to move on to the next step.
·
Please type the title
as it appears on screen in the opening credits, paying attention to the
formatting rules above. In order to simplify things please do not include
the IMDb specific tags such as the year, (TV), (V) etc as we will calculate and
add those automatically on your behalf based on your choice in the 'Type' and
'Year' sections below.
·
In the 'Type' section,
choose the correct type for your title. If you choose 'Film' or 'TV' we will
ask a further question in the next stage to refine the exact type of the title
(watch for the 'Subtype' category appearing under the main 'Type' field in the
next page).
·
In the 'Status'
section choose the option which most accurately reflects the release status of
this title. We will ask for evidence of public screenings in later stages if
you select the 'Released' option and your title was made after 1999.
·
In the 'Year' form
enter the year of first public screening as defined by the rules above.
·
From the 'I am...'
menu, select, the option which most accurately reflects your connection to this
title.
·
After gathering
further initial information on the next few screens we will perform one final
search for existing titles close to this title and you will need to confirm
your title is genuinely new.
We will then show other categories of information we require in order to
validate the title. Please provide as much information as possible since the
more data you supply, the easier and faster we can verify and add this title.
If you require any help on any of the sections look for a blue '?' to the right
and click this for specific help on that section.
